Our Story

In 2009, Brightfield® Transportation Solutions (BTS) began as a conversation among friends who shared a deep appreciation for nature, entrepreneurship and a longing for more environmentally sound and socially responsible transportation. Those early conversations turned into rough sketches and then draft business pans. We honed our ideas, exposing the cutting edge where our strengths could be leveraged to create opportunity. What we came to were four key realizations:

  • the American automobile fleet is beginning the transition from oil to electricity because over the next decades the supply of oil will dwindle;
  • we have the technology and know-how to fuel electric vehicles effectively and reliably with renewable solar power;
  • there is an unmet need for durable EV infrastructure that supports and inspires a vibrant EV market place;
  • marrying the renewable energy and alternative transportation sectors through the manufacturing and deployment of solar powered EV charging stations creates meaningful and secure jobs.

There was little to work with in 2009. As we began the process of wrapping our brains around the science, economics and solutions of EV infrastructure. We researched every EV study, EV infrastructure component, solar photovoltaic product, existing and developing EV, market forecast and regional economic development plan we could get our hands on. Each new piece of information—from Project Get Ready, to the Electrification Road Map, to the roll-out of the Leaf and Volt, to Department of Energy goals, to North Carolina’s clean-tech sector focus - each confirmed that we were riding the wave of innovation on rising seas of possibility.

Like every great business idea before us, there comes the need for capitalization. Our initial need was met by a grant from the North Carolina Department of Commerce’s Green Business Fund that, through the State Energy Office, administered US Department of Energy American Recovery and Reinvestment Act money aimed at growing the nation’s renewable energy sector. The grant enabled us to achieve our primary start-up objectives:

  • locally design and manufacture solar supported EV charging stations we call Brightfields®;
  • build strong public/private partnerships with city, county and state government that result in Brightfields® being built on publicly accessible municipal and state-owned property;
  • create collaborative relationships with regional organizations to support EV advocacy, infrastructure deployment, market development and funding;
  • develop three public service announcements to provide EV education and inspiration to the public;
  • launch a website to share the Brightfield® TS vision, link the public to quality EV industry research, and demonstrate the possibility and desirability of solar-fueled transportation.

The result was the deployment of the first 4 Brightfield® Charging Stations that generate solar power and provide durable and protected EV charging. Because Brightfields are grid-tied, solar fuel is generated and put on the grid whenever the sun is shining and electricity is dispensed from the grid to vehicles rain or shine, day or night. Brightfields® provide consumers with the environmental, economic and social benefits of driving on sunshine.

BTS leveraged that success and entered onto partnership with Nissan North America and NRG Energy’s EVgo division-a partnership that resulted in 17 dual-cord 50kW DC Fast Chargers (DCFC) deployed in North Carolina and Tennessee. These dual-cord DCFC technology is able to charge any EV model—whether SAE and Chademo plug equipped—from empty to full in under 30 minutes. Chargers were deployed at high utilization municipal downtown parking locations and at private sites, such as convenience stores and shopping centers that offer good highway access and a quality retail experience. Locations include Chapel Hill, Durham, Greensboro, Salisbury, Charlotte, Asheville and Knoxville.

BTS continues to garner support from industry partners, investors and grantors to help shift America from dependency on fossil fuel to driving on sunshine.

BTS Success to Date:

  • BTS has worked with municipalities and businesses across NC to deploy over $1.5 million of DCFC and solar-integrated Brightfields on public and private property.
  • In 2014, BTS partnered with Nissan and the NC Clean Fuel Advanced Technology fund to deploy 11 DCFC units across NC.
  • In 2015, BTS again partnered with Nissan and NRG Energy to deliver another 10 DCFC units in NC and TN markets.
  • BTS is a founding partner and on the steering committee of the NC Plug-In EV Task Force.
  • BTS has been recognized by D.O.E. Clean Cities, NC PEV Task Force, and the NC Sustainable Energy Association as an outstanding community partner.
  • BTS has remained committed to manufacturing Brightfields in NC with American made steel and solar components.

Brightfield Testimonials:

David Gantt, Chairman Buncombe County Board of Commissioners

“BTS is an innovative Asheville company with the know-how and integrity needed to get the job done. I was extremely impressed with their ability to deliver on the NC Green Business Fund grant that provided our county with 10 solar integrated EV charging stations and supported 100 quality jobs.

Maggie Ullman, former Asheville City Chief Sustainability Officer

“BTS and the City of Asheville partnered to install on municipal property the state’s first privately owned, solar power-integrated Brightfield Charging Station. Asheville City’s sustainability, city manager and legal departments worked with BTS to develop a public/private partnership framework and land lease agreement model that enables the City to receive Brightfield Charging Stations with no upfront cost, and allows BTS to own, operate and maintain the charging stations and control system revenues for a fixed period of time. It’s a win win.

John G. Pierce, UNC Asheville Vice Chancellor of Finance & Campus Operations

“BTS’ business approach is highly collaborative. When they came to UNC Asheville to place a Brightfield on our campus, they did so committed to engaging campus stakeholders and delivering solutions that fit UNC Asheville’s needs. As an institution committed to sustainability, UNC Asheville values our Brightfield Charging Stations for the transportation fuel cost and emissions reductions they provide, and as a powerful marketing tool that communicates UNC Asheville’s sustainability commitment.”

Matthew Raker, former AdvantageWest Vice President, Entrepreneurship

“AdvantageWest has been engaged with BTS over the past five years having supported their initial deployment of charging stations and provided them with Advantage Opportunity Fund funding. We believe that BTS’ Solar Driven Experience is a strong economic development opportunity for the region that will deliver significant tourism revenue, job creation and renewable power production. AdvantageWest is committed to assisting BTS bring investors to the table and help raise the capital needed to fully execute the Solar Driven Experience state-wide.”
